Stories of Subsistence

For Melina: Before scientific studies and before Western ships met our shores, the Sugpiaq people had already mastered the language of the sea and the wisdom of its creatures.

Hunting and Fishing isn’t just a sport for our Chugach Tribal members, they depend on the salmon, marine mammals, birds, and plants to feed themselves and their families. The subsistence way of life is changing, and the change is perpetuated by changes to subsistence resources, changes to our community dynamics, climate change, and other environmental change.  Our tribal members kindly shared their knowledge of subsistence practices passed from generation to generation that were informed by cultural memories, observations of change, and their lived experiences in the natural environment. Their stories of traditional customs, subsistence harvest, observations of local changes shared with us are invaluable and will forever help to better inform us and others about the importances of these local practices.

Chugach Regional Resources Commission produced a recipe book based on recipes from Tribal members in the Chugach region.

The recipe book can be purchased here: https://chugach-regional-resources-commission.square.site/product/recipe-book-featuring-traditional-foods/3?cp=true&sa=true&sbp=false&q=false

In an effort to enhance food security in the region, CRRC used CDC grants funds to remaster the recipe pages to include nutritional values provided by the ANTHC as well as translations in various dialects, when available, from the Chugachmiut Heritage Preservation.
